The Recent BBC Article: Can electrical stimulation improve your gym workout?
Beth Hayton2022-10-07T09:14:01+00:00How EMS Toning Sessions Can Work for You
At Feel Electric we believe that EMS sessions will help you slim down, tone up, get fitter and get stronger in just 20 minutes a week. But don’t only take our word for it. In a recent BBC business news article, Can electrical stimulation improve your gym workout https://www.bbc.com/news/business-62887379 EMS fan Lebby Eyres stressed just how much “whole-body electrical muscle stimulation suits…work for her”. Not that the EMS experience wasn’t a little bit different at first.
Mrs Eyres said that the first time she put on an EMS suit, “it felt strange”. Initially she asked herself whether “I really going to be able to exercise wearing these?” Then the EMS “stimulus of the machine gave me the most unusual sensations.” The next morning though Mrs Eyres felt the true effect of only 20 minutes of an EMS session, “her muscles had the level of soreness that she typically got from working out for a few hours.

As mentioned in the BBC article, https://www.bbc.com/news/business-62887379 thanks in part to her EMS training she went on to row across the Atlantic with three friends in the 2021 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. Since she started her regular EMS sessions, she’s proud that “my abs are much better now than when I was 21”. As a side benefit of being healthier and stronger because of EMS training, “everyone complimented me on my much stronger and toned figure.”

Using EMS Technology for a Healthier Future
As mentioned in the BBC article, Can electrical stimulation improve your gym workout https://www.bbc.com/news/business-62887379 , EMS technology helps people embrace a smarter and more efficient health and fitness regime. Phil Horton, UK director for German firm Miha Bodytec who manufacture EMS body suits, describes the Electric Muscle Stimulation process further. “We are bypassing the brain. We can trigger the muscle in a smarter and more efficient way compared to the way the brain would tell the muscle to move.” That allows you to tone up and slim down much more effectively than hours at the gym. No surprise then that a recent report says that the overall global market for EMS will grow by 51% from $122m in 2020 to $184m in 2030.
Our Member's Results
Although the article concluded that the ‘jury was still very much out’ on the benefits of EMS training, we wanted to share some of the real life results our members have experienced.
Kirsty’s Story:
” I have had back problems for nearly 30 years and have tried just about every treatment out there. 18 months ago this really came to a head and during that time I have been unable to exercise. For me, that is a biggy as I am a very active person. A regular down the gym, I love to walk and to ride my bike. All that had to stop. When Feel Electric opened in York, it advertised that the EMS sessions could help back pain as well as being a great form of low impact exercise which was just what I needed. I was very sceptical that 20 minutes of exercise could be that good for my fitness and back and in all honesty, when I signed up for the free trial, in my head there was no way I would pay £25 per week for membership. How wrong I was! I LOVED it.
In 20 minutes I felt that I had had as good a workout as I do in 2 hours down the gym. And it was fun too. My back held out nicely but I didn’t join there and then, as I wanted to give it a couple of days to see if there was any negative impact. Almost straight away, my back was soo much better. Relief like I have not had for at least 18 months. Since signing up and having weekly sessions, I am back on my bike and enjoying long walks. I’m also back on my spin bike and can do extra weights in between if I want to. I haven’t needed to see the physio which I was doing at least once a month, and my chiropractor appointments are now every 5 or 6 weeks rather than every 2. I have been able to cancel my gym membership as with this and what I do in between, I no longer need it.
As well as my back, one of my biggest concerns was the impact not exercising was having on my lung capacity as I am asthmatic and borderline COPD. I had noticed that I was getting out of breath much quicker. As my fitness levels and strength have improved, so has my breathlessness and my lungs feel better. In fact they are now back to normal for me. Another massive bonus. I am now a huge fan of EMS and cannot recommend it highly enough. I think everyone should have a go!!!”
Stacy’s Story:
“I waited for the opening date to go. I have severe back issues and had been told I could never exercise repetitive strenuous or increasing mobility again. Feel Electric has been my life line. The craving for the exercise buzz you get when you’ve finished training I was worried about getting weak, I am weaker than I was however feel electric and using EMS has kept a really good level of strength throughout my body and I get the wonderful buzz after my sessions I was so craving for.
My physio says I have to work the many little muscles in my back and make them strong so I’m using my muscles more than my bone structure to support my upper body.
I went for emergency surgery as it became extremely serious. I was still able to use the EMS training to a level to suit my situation – and the Personal Trainer was very professional and got to know my situation (Sophie-York) and she knew exactly how to get the best out of me without causing risk of more damage. As I mentioned I had emergency surgery (7hrs!) as my back L3/L4 L4/L5 L5/S1 vertebrae were in such a degenerated state my nervous system was in danger of causing permanent paralysis to my lower body.
This has been my lifeline. It works my muscles hard but for my ability. It is safe exercise, it is great for anyone and everyone! Perhaps your short of time and you want to squeeze the equivalent of 3 decent sessions into 20 minutes! Do it go for it! The more you push the more they will push you! I get out of breath, sweat (sorry how nice but I do) you can feel muscles working & often I can be stiff for a few, 3 days afterwards, especially my bottom for some reason.
Brill brill brill. It’s good for my mental health also because if I hadn’t found this way to keep fit when it has been a big big part of my life since I can even remember ‘exercise’, I would of become depressed. I was so hurting in my heart when they told me life has to change no exercise! Amazing! You have to try it.”
June’s Story:
June struggles with osteoarthritis, she has muscle wastage in one leg and has had 2 knee replacements on the other which haven’t worked. It’s not easy for her to return to exercise but our low impact EMS training is ideal for June to “gain strength and avoid having another knee replacement” Just three sessions in and June “noticed a relief in pain in her knees after the sessions”. As her leg muscles improve thanks to EMS training, she’s noticed that she’s “much more able to do the movements during the sessions”. For example, in her first EMS workout, she couldn’t do lunges due to the pain in her knees. Now she can perform lunges as the EMS therapy has also improved her mobility. That sounds like a terrific start to her EMS pain relief sessions, well done, June!
